Iceland South Coast & Highlands 2017
After my sailing trip through East Greenland, I met Luisa in Iceland, and together with friends we traveled through the south up to the highlands – an adventure, wild and timeless. September was the perfect season: long days for exploring, dark nights for the Northern Lights, although shortly after the new moon we only saw faint light streaks.
Sunset and glacier magic
The camera often stayed in the backpack, but the drone flew whenever the weather allowed. At the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, we experienced a beautiful sunset where red clouds burned above the nearby hotel, a contrast between fire and ice, rough and delicate. The glacier tongues around Jökulsárlón, far from the tourist crowds, were equally enchanting.
Detours and highland adventures
We returned again to the black beach of Stokksness before I set out for the highlands for the first time. On the trip to the Laki craters, the weather let us down – low-hanging clouds veiled the crater landscape, but the atmospheric photos still shone. The next day, after 26 river crossings each way, we reached Landmannalaugar – wow! Despite strong wind and threatening rain clouds, I let the drone rise, and the view was spectacular, like a watercolor painting, a dance between nature and art.
A conflict after the trip
After every Iceland trip, I swear never to return… but then I think of the aerial shots from the highlands, and the pondering begins anew – an experience swinging between farewell and longing, deeply rooted in the heart.
