From above, salt fields lose all sense of scale. They become patches of colour in pink, red and turquoise, crossed by dead-straight dykes. It started in January on the Algarve and near Huelva: three days, around 120 kilometres of flying per drone, and in between mineral lakes in colours that didn’t look entirely healthy. Since then I’ve been looking for salt pans wherever we travel – near Zadar in Croatia, between Marseille and Montpellier, in Aveiro in Portugal and on the coast of Yucatán.
