Bolivia – Sunrise on the Salar de Uyuni
The true highlight of our tour through Bolivia’s highlands was the breathtaking salt flats of the Salar de Uyuni! A vast, endless white expanse as far as the eye can see. We got up before dawn to be out on the flats just in time to enjoy the sunrise in solitude. Even the blue hour was magical and could’ve lasted a little longer. But when the sun finally began to rise and our shadows stretched endlessly across the salt, wow – it was truly stunning with all the salt crystal formations on the ground and that beautiful light!
Afterward, we continued on to the surreal cactus island of Isla Incahuasi, which rises like a rocky oasis in the middle of the salt flat, covered in giant cacti and ancient fossil formations. Not far from there lies an abandoned railway and rusted locomotives, once used to transport salt across the region – we stopped there after exploring the island.
All in all, it was a truly impressive and diverse day!
