In the Ancient Imperial City of Fès
After an overnight stop in Midelt, we reached the final highlight of our road trip—Morocco’s oldest imperial city, Fès, a destination wild and steeped in history. The drive from Midelt to Fès once again offered a striking, barren landscape that reminded me of Tibet—a contrast between vastness and memory.
A Day in the Alleyways
We spent our full day wandering through the narrow, colorful alleyways, getting lost more than once, of course, until we finally found the tannery quarter of Fès. Much like in Marrakesh, a variety of leather pieces were dyed here—raw and vibrant. The people seemed less pushy, and from a few shops we had a lovely view over the tanneries—despite the pungent smell for some noses, a spectacle of craft and challenge.
Sights and a Fitting End
Afterward, we visited the Attarine Madrasa, the park near the magnificent Bab Bou Jeloud gate, and strolled through the vegetable market back to the beautiful Fuente Nejjarine—a day full of discoveries that perfectly rounded off the journey.
