Sailing Expedition in East Greenland 3/3
Just before reaching the Knud Rasmussen Glacier, we anchored the night before in a small, quiet bay to head towards the glacier’s edge the next morning – a moment, wild and full of anticipation. Overnight, a light rain system moved in, casting a cold, magical light as we drifted past giant icebergs. Our favorite ritual was a must: ice bathing – despite a thin layer of ice forming on the water after the cold night, a contrast between cold and courage.
A Flight over Ice and Aurora
The next morning proved the drone had earned its place – after sunrise, we once again cruised past those massive icebergs. I couldn’t resist taking some aerial shots, ideally showing both the icebergs and our boat, Aurora Arktika, to capture the scale – raw and majestic. Launching from the boat was risky – radar and radio signals caused interference, and the Mavic wobbled badly; controlling it was a challenge, especially with all the ropes on deck. But after a minute it stabilized, and the image series here is pulled from video – a great feature, capturing stills from footage. So there I was, standing below on the boat, as we slowly motored along, letting the Mavic glide above and around us – speechless!
Northern Lights and Farewell
The next two nights gifted us with beautiful Northern Lights, but then it was time to say goodbye to the Aurora crew, Captain Siggi, and our fun-loving group of ice swimmers – such a shame! It wasn’t just the landscapes, hikes, and kayak tours I missed, but also those cozy evenings with fresh fish and whiskey on the rocks. A dance between nature and camaraderie.
