The UNESCO World Heritage Site Trinidad
Our anticipation for the UNESCO World Heritage town of Trinidad was huge after everything we had seen and heard from friends — a destination, wild and promising. That’s why we planned to stay four nights, to explore the town and its surroundings thoroughly, a contrast between expectation and discovery. The colorful streets of Trinidad offered beautiful photo opportunities with people and vintage cars, raw and lively.
From hustle to the beach
At sunrise, we explored the streets around Plaza Mayor, the Palacio de Cantero, Plaza Carillo, and Plaza de Santa Ana — but after just a few hours, our joy faded as the tourist crowds flooded the center and smothered the authentic atmosphere. Grateful for our rental car, we drove in the afternoon to the beautiful beaches Playa Ancón and Playa María Aguilar, a spectacle of calm and coast. In the evening, we found a super delicious meal at Restaurante 1514 by the central Plaza Mayor — a must for every Trinidad visitor!
A historic moment
That night marked Fidel’s death, followed by nine days of national mourning — no music, no alcohol. The streets of Trinidad pulsed with life only that evening; afterwards, they seemed deserted, a dance between celebration and silence. More on that in the next blog posts!
