Hike to the Ice Chapel at Watzmann
On Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025, we set off early to catch the first boat on Königssee to St. Bartholomä Church and then hike to the famous Ice Chapel at the foot of the Watzmann – a start, wild and determined, a contrast between effort and anticipation. The Ice Chapel, a cave in a massive snowfield, was once again, as last year during my shoot with Silvi and Philipp at the same spot, threatened by an avalanche, raw and disappointing.
A spectacular landscape
Nevertheless, the landscape was impressive – the rain was heavy as we ascended, and at the highest point, we reached the snow line, a spectacle of nature and challenge. The next day we planned to hike toward Obersee, but since it wasn’t open to the public until a week later, we headed home earlier and stopped for a hike around the beautiful Eibsee at the foot of the Zugspitze.
