Jökulsárlón/Fjallsárlón

We spent a whole day around the Jökulsárlón. In the morning we went first to the black beach, where the sea washes the chunks of ice back ashore. We had seen this place twice before in summer – in winter it is a different place. Instead of a few small chunks there are many more and much bigger ones, some in that typical deep blue and full of detail. The glacier lagoon itself was less exciting this time: almost completely covered in ice, but in pieces so small that we spent the least time there. Afterwards we drove every possible track to get closer to the glacier tongue, and in the afternoon on to the Fjallsárlón, another glacier lagoon close by. At night we lay in wait at the Jökulsárlón again, even though bad weather was forecast. With the naked eye there was hardly anything to see – but between the clouds the camera suddenly did catch an aurora. Not much, but at least a start.
