Journey into the Sierra Maestra to Santo Domingo
The Sierra Maestra was, alongside the Viñales Valley, the most beautiful and impressive landscape we saw in Cuba — a region, wild and majestic, known from the pre-revolution era when Fidel Castro and his followers hid in the jungle, evading government troops, a contrast between nature and history. Our plan was to hike from Santo Domingo the next day to Fidel’s hideout, raw and adventurous.
A highlight of the journey
The trip through the hilly jungle landscape was already an experience, and just in time for sunset, we reached Santo Domingo. Shortly before arrival, an unusual sight caught our attention — a mountain goat giving birth right on the main road, a moment that showed how alive this rural region is, a spectacle of life and the unexpected.
